Nachiyar Kovil – Kal Garudan in Tanjavur | Divya Desam Tour

Nachiyar Koil – Kal Garudan in Tanjavur

Nachiyar Kovil or Sreenivasa Perumal sanctuary is situated in a spot called Nachiyar Kovil which is somewhere in the range of 10 km from Kumbakonam. This sanctuary is considered as the fourteenth Divya Desam sanctuary among the 108 Divya Desams. It is worked by the Chola King Kochengan and it is the first Vaishnavite Temple

Another significant part of this sanctuary is Kal Garudan – Vishnu’s mount made up of stone. This immense symbol of Garuda is comprised of Saligrama Stone and we have a different place of worship for this Garuda stretching out around 10 ½ Feet, simply outside the fundamental sanctum. It is said that the artist who made this icon of Garuda, saw that the symbol began flying when he wrapped up its wings. The artist got stunned by this unexpected activity of the feathered creature and he tossed a stone at the Garuda striking its nose. At that point the Garuda came tumbling down and chose to remain there in the sanctuary to favor the aficionados.

During the long periods of Margazhi (December-January) and Panguni (March-April), an uncommon occasion called “Kal Garuda Seva” will be acted in the sanctuary. During this time, the Kal Garudan would be removed from his sanctum for a parade. The Kal Garudan would step out of its Sanctum by around 7 PM and now the enchanted occasion happens. Just 4 individuals are required to convey the Kal Garudan from its sanctum. He would be hung in another silk dhoti, designed with sparkling gems and with a colossal bloom festoon. Later when he progresses farther of each layer of the Prakaram, his weight would increment exponentially requesting 8, 16, 32 and 64 individuals to convey Him. At long last, when he comes out of the Vahana Mandapa His weight would have drastically expanded and absolutely 128 individuals were required to convey. Indeed, even He would perspire lavishly with the goal that his garments get doused in the perspiration.

We could even observe the beads of sweat on His Nose. Curiously, when He comes back to the sanctuary after the parade, the Stone Garuda would diminish its weight in the opposite request with the goal that lone 4 individuals would be required to convey Him back at the sanctum.

Another significant element of this Kal Garuda Seva is that the Garudan would get his first distinctions from Sreenivasa Perumal at his sanctum for conveying him easily on to the roads of Nachiyar Koil, on this extraordinary event. When the parade is finished, the following day morning, the Lord would introduce His Parivattam, dhoti, and wreath to the Kal Garudan. With this occasion, the Kal Garuda Utsavam reaches a conclusion.
